Waco's indie culture magazine — the real version of this city.
The Story
Waco has a story that doesn't get told enough — at least not by the people who actually live it. The cooks pulling doubles at places that don't have PR teams. The musicians playing Tuesday nights to twelve people who showed up on purpose. The artists turning old warehouses into something worth walking into.
Grackle exists for all of it. Not the tourist version of Waco. Not the corporate version. The real one. Named after the loudest, most unapologetic bird in Texas — that tracks.
We designed and built everything: the brand, the website, the newsletter infrastructure, and the content strategy. 100% independent — no investors, no corporate sponsors, no one telling us what to cover.
What Grackle Covers
The kitchens, bars, trucks, and taquerias that make Waco taste like home.
Live acts, local venues, and the sounds you won't find on any algorithm.
Studios, galleries, murals, and the people making something out of nothing.
Vintage finds, antique hauls, and the stories behind the stuff we keep.
Photo essays and visual stories — Waco through a different lens.
Honest takes on restaurants, bars, cafes, movies, books, and whatever else we feel like rating.
What We Built
Name, logo, wordmark, color system, typography, and editorial voice. Grackle needed to feel like a magazine you'd actually want to read — not a startup pitch deck. Confident, local, a little loud.
Custom-built on Astro with a content management system for articles, categories, and issue archiving. Designed for long-form reading and visual storytelling. Fast, clean, no clutter.
Per-topic newsletter subscriptions — readers pick exactly what they want. Food & bev, music, arts, digs, lookbooks, events, reviews, or the whole roundup. Built to respect people's inboxes.
Editorial calendar, column structure, and a publishing cadence: regular articles online with a quarterly print edition. Issue Zero is the kickoff, with columns expanding as the team grows.
